AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serving with the Fort Hays State University Foster Grandparent Program are assigned to help children in schools to provide guidance and support.
Foster Grandparents typically serve in pre-school to 3rd grade, but may assist any student with a need. They serve as role models and tutors based on the needs of the student as determined by the classroom teacher.
Some of the tasks that Foster Grandparents may do:
- Read to a child
- Listen to a child read
- Help a child stay on task
- Help with site words
- Give encouragement
- Help a child build confidence
- Provide comfort and love
- Model good behavior
- Play games
- Give individual attention
- Be a friend
Volunteer Benefits:

Volunteer commitment is 5 to 40 hours per week.
The FHSU Foster Grandparent Program serves the following counties: Barton, Ellis, Ford, Gove, Graham, Pawnee, Rooks, Russell and Trego.
